Marry in Noosa in less than 1 month!
A 'Shortening of Time' approval may enable you to marry in under 1 month!
Did you know that the minimum time to legally marry is 1 month? Most couples choosing to have their wedding on the Sunshine Coast or to marry in Noosa give a few months’ notice. A Notice of Intended Marriage is required to be lodged with your celebrant so if for example you do this on May 12, you can marry on June 12 or later, as this form is valid up to 18 months. Sometimes couples need to marry in less than 1 month and did you know that this can be possible?
It’s a process known as ‘shortening of time’ put in place by the Attorney General. It can only be approved by a prescribed authority which may vary according to the state in which you wish to marry. In Qld this is very straightforward as the application is submitted to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
There are 5 very strict categories under which shortening of time approval may be considered and occur but this is at the sole discretion of the prescribed authority.
1. employment-related or other travel commitments
2. wedding or celebration arrangements, or religious considerations
3. medical reasons
4. legal proceedings
5. an error in giving notice

To marry in less than 1 month, firstly contact your celebrant to complete and sign the NOIM. Write a brief letter/email outlining the circumstances to be considered,this must be submitted along with proof of the reason so if it is travelfor example, an E-ticket clearly showing all the travel details or a letter onvalidated letterhead from a medical institution showing medical reasons. Thereis a shortening of time application fee payable to Births, Deaths and Marriages regardless of whether the shortening is approved or not.
Your celebrant can do all the rest for you and an answer is usually returned within 2 business days or sooner if it is for compassionate medical reasons.
